Pinterest Tested: Fixing Scratched DVD's

Welcome to Pinterest Tested! Ever wonder if that miracle cleaner is really miraculous? Or what about that homemade facial cleanser or delicious-looking recipe? This is the place to find out! Each Monday I am testing Pins that catch my eye to see if they really live up to the claims made on Pinterest. It's like the Mythbusters of Domesticity!
Today I'm testing THIS PIN from Apartment Therapy. The post claims they have found a way to save scratched DVD's. When I originally pinned this, I was so excited. Kids are so hard on DVD's! I learned the hard way that the family rule just has to be that kids can't touch DVD's. Ever. We still have a few Disney movies that skip. It's so frustrating! Could a banana and toothpaste possibly save these movies? I was desperate enough to give it a try.
So basically you rub the toothpaste on, wipe it off, then rub the banana on and wipe it off. Then you finish with a spray of Windex and wipe until it's perfectly clean.
I can't tell you how weird it felt to be rubbing a banana on a DVD. I'm just glad my husband wasn't home. I didn't need to hear any snarky comments along the lines of, "So did you see that on Pinterest, too?"

The verdict? Didn't work. My DVD still stuck just like it did before. Bummer! I was really hoping this would at least decrease the amount of skipping a little bit. Nope. Total Pin Bomb.

Huh. I'm kind of surprised this didn't work. I pinned something similar and it worked great for me. The one I pinned just used crest for kids and you rub it on until it starts to dry. Then you rinse it off with water. It doesn't change dvds that are scratched really really bad, but it does buff out most scratches.

Glad to know, so I don't have to try it! I love your Pin testing!

For at least the Disney movies, they have a program where you send in the damaged disk and you get a new one for a fraction of the cost new. http://myfrugaladventures.com/2012/07/disney-movie-scratched-dvd-replacement-program/

Used music stores usually have a machine to buff scratches out. I figured for $2, it was worth a try. It totally worked! Pull out the yellow pages and call around to see if you can find one!

You should try this one: http://www.homestoriesatoz.com/tutes-tips-not-to-miss/how-fix-scratched-dvd.html

Very similar but with one EXTRA ingredient.

Hope it helps :)
