Pinterest Tested: Glowing Mountain Dew

Welcome to Pinterest Tested! Ever wonder if that miracle cleaner is really miraculous? Or what about that homemade facial cleanser? Does it work? This is the place to find out! Each Monday I am testing Pins that catch my eye to see if they really live up to the claims made on Pinterest. It's like the Mythbusters of Domesticity!

Ready for this week's Pin?

This Pin claims that mixing a tiny bit of baking soda, three capfuls of hydrogen peroxide and a 1/4 inch of Mountain Dew will make the bottle light up like a lightbulb.

THE TEST: Does it work? Can I really make Mountain Dew glow in the dark?I gave it my best shot. The kids and I went into the bathroom, mixed up all the ingredients, turned out the lights and shook that bottle as hard as we could. This is what it looked like:

THE RESULTS: Well, the picture speaks for itself. It did not work even one bit! This Pin is a total hoax!
I am a little disappointed, but not really surprised. It was just too strange to be real. I even tried four or five times with slightly different proportions . Then I came back 10 minutes later to see if it was glowing. Nope. Totally doesn't work at all.

The biggest bummer is that I bought a 2 liter of Mountain Dew just to do this test and no one in our house even drinks the stuff!

Oh, well. You win some, you lose some. Maybe I can look on Pinterest to see what else Mountain Dew is good for. Haha.

I wonder if it is because you used a 2 liter bottle, in the picture they use a much smaller bottle!

It looks like they just put in a glow stick. :( BTW, it would be nice if you linked your page to Facebook or Twitter for those of us who do not do Pinterest. I do love your stuff though!

It's all over the Internet now that this is a hoax, first started in 2007. Apparently there's a video on YouTube where it looks like they do this but when the camera focuses on the spoon they switch the bottle and add what is probably the contents of a few glow sticks. They say trying it the way it's listed on Pinterest and Facebook could actually be dangerous, so at least your test only resulted in wasted Mountain Dew and nothing worse!

On the topic of things that glow in the dark, I tried the pin that describes using tonic water instead of regular water to make glow in the dark jello - total fail...

Regarding the tonic water - I think that is supposed to glow with a black light, not glow in the dark.

My son and i found the same exact instructions on line and it did not work. Then we found instructions where you also add dish soap and the contents of a glow stick, then shake it up. This worked perfectly. It glowed for about 3 minutes. you are probably saying of course it glowed with the light sick contents. Well if you put the glow stick contents in just mountain dew without the other stuff it does not work! The mountain dew just distinguishes the glow. We did it for his science fair and the kids loved it! Of course it is easier to just buy a glow stick, but not as fun ;)
