Fabric Flower Tutorial

Spring has finally sprung in my neck of the woods and to celebrate, I'm posting a fun mini-tutorial. These gorgeous flowers are deceptively simple to make. Ready to give it a try?
Petal Flowers

1. You will need polyester satin fabric. I bought mine at Hobby Lobby. It's super cheap and it comes in lots of fun colors. You could buy as little as 1/4 yard and have enough to make several flowers---they really don't take much fabric at all!

2. Cut squares in progressively smaller sizes. The bigger silver flower has four layers and the biggest sqare was probably 4 or 5 inches, so you would need one 4 inch square one 3 1/2 inch square, one 3 inch square, one 2 1/2 inch square, roughly.

3. Cut slits on each side of the square, as shown in the photograph.
4. Using a lighter, melt all the outside edges and down each slit until they shrivel and you like the way they look.

5. Stack the squares together from smallest on top to biggest on bottom. Use a dab of hot glue in between each layer to hold the whole thing together.
.
6. Hot glue a coordinating felt circle on the back of each flower.
.
7. Hot glue a hair clip or corsage pin on the felt.
.
8. Add a center embellishment if desired.
The circular flower is made the same way, except you cut concentric circles and melt their edges (no slits needed). So easy!

Cool Finds

Spent some time browsing new blogs today, something I haven't done in forever. I feel like my creative juices are now overflowing! I found so many cool things that I thought I'd share so you can waste a whole day browsing new blogs too! haha.

1. Be still my heart! This duvet cover is gorgeous. And Made By Lex makes it actually seem possible. Love it!

2. A new favorite blog... Grosgrain Fabulous finds clothes at thrift stores and remakes them. You should see the "before" pictures of this blue polka dot dress. You will be amazed. She also does amazing things to shoes and has awesome style. After spending at least two hours devouring her delicious blog, I have to restrain the urge to run, walk, or crawl to the nearest thrift store so I can try some of her tricks. She is truly fabulous.

Who doesn't need to learn 37 ways to tie a scarf? Enough said!

4. Ruffle Scarf Tutorial at Happy Together. This one is so pretty, you don't even need to tie it fancy! Check out her whole blog while you're at it. Lots of fun stuff!

5. And last but not least, look at these shoes! They used to be plain black pumps that were getting worn out, so Dave's Wife Mod Podged them.. Mod Podge shoes?! Shut up!

A New Can of Worms

At a church activity a week ago, we learned the basics of crochet. I grew up around crochet...my grandma and aunt are both FANTASTIC advanced crocheters, yet somehow I knew nothing more than a basic chain stitch and that was sketchy at best. So I am proud to announce that now I know enough to actually make something. Introducing my first crochet creation:
Isn't it PURTY!? And you know what the best part is? A friend taught me how to do the stitches, but I came up with this method of making the flower myself. The brown crochet underneath is one of those headband beanie things, which is still a work in progress.

I am so excited to have a new skill in my crafting arsenal, but truly, did I need another temptation at craft stores? Talk about opening a can of worms!
